INFLAMAGIC® Summary

IN VITRO ANIT-INFLAMMATORY STUDIES OF AN ESSENTIAL OIL (EO)

The test substance, an essential oil (EO), was tested for in vitro anti-inflammatory property against TNF-α, PGE-2 and IL-6 production and also inhibitory activity against COX-1 and COX-2 by ELISA methods.

The results revealed that EO possessed potent TNF-α inhibitory activity at 45.5 mg/ml and 455 µg/ml (66 and 73% respectively) PGE-2 production was significantly inhibited (79%) at 45.5 mg/ml while weak inhibitory activity was seen at lesser concentration. Significant COX-2 inhibition was observed at 4.5 mg/ml (96%) and (26%) for 455 µg/ml while no inhibitory activity was seen on IL-6 and COX-1.

From the results it may be concluded that the EO has selective action on inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α, PGE-2 and COX-2. EO does not have significant inhibitory activity against IL-6 and COX-1.
