Menstrual Magic ® Uterine Contraction Study
SUMMARY
The objective of the study was to determine the effect of an essential oil (EO) on the rat isolated virgin non-pregnant uterus smooth muscle. The uterine contraction was induced by prostaglandins (PGF2-alpha and PGE2). The effect on the uterine contractility induced by PGs was evaluated at 25, 50 and 100 ug/ml of the EO.
The results show a dose dependent rightward shift of DRC of both PGs in presence of increasing concentration of EO. There was significant (p<0.05) increase in EC50 value of PGs in the presence of 100ug/ml of EO. Also in a dose dependent manner EO caused an in increase in dose ratio of both the PGs. At 25, 50 and 100ug/ml of EO caused 25.7 +/- 2.9, 63.0 +/- 1.0 and 77.4 +/- 1.8 % of inhibition at PGF 2-alpha at 1 x 10-9 M respectively. Similarly at 25, 50 and 100ug/ml of EO caused 4.5 +/- 12.1, 3.3 +/- 1.3 and 29.7 +/- 5.3 % of inhibition at PGE2 at 1.8 x 10-9 M respectively.
In conclusion, the test substance has certain ingredients to attenuate the contractions induced by PGF2-alpha and PGE2 by the virtue of its non-competitive antagonism. The EO has more specific inhibitory activity on PGF2=alpha than PGE2 induced contractions.
